Messmate

Botanical name: Eucalyptus obliqua

Origin: Messmate grows in Tasmania and Victoria and on the tablelands of New South Wales and southern Queensland.

Appearance: Heartwood pale brown, sapwood pale yellow. Texture moderately coarse but even. Grain sometimes interlocked. Growth rings visible but not prominent. Pencil streak sometimes present.

Properties: Relatively easy to work, glues well. Satisfactory for steam bending.

Common uses: General construction, furniture, panelling, flooring.
