Tallowwood
Botanical name: Eucalyptus microcorys
Origin: Tallowwood grows in the coastal areas and coastal ranges from the Hunter River in New South Wales to Maryborough in Queensland.
Appearance: Heartwood yellowish brown with a tinge of olive green. Sapwood usually distinctively paler. Texture moderately coarse but even. Grain often interlocked. Growth rings not easily distinguished. Pinhole borer marks often present. Water rings sometimes present.
Comments: Slow in drying. Collapse is negligible. Reasonably easy to work. Gluing can be affected by the wood's greasy nature. Moderately suitable for steam bending. The heartwood is very durable (Class 1).
Common Uses: General construction, heavy engineering structures, sleepers, bridges, wharves, flooring (particularly dance floors), decking, cladding, window sills, cross-arms, poles, piles, cooling towers.
Hardness Rating: Average Hardness Rating - Dry: Hard
